MACH

Project Overview

This project centred around designing a 100 m2 Retail Space to be located in the decommissioned and historical Rossdale power plant near Downtown Edmonton. One of the main aims of this project was to practice sustainability by revitalizing an already existing building. Another goal of this project was to bring together two artistic Makers with the goal of showcasing and selling their products. Additionally, this project aimed to attract a wide range of customers who could participate in growing a sense of community and collaboration and, thus, participate in an important aspect of revitalizing this historic area.

Details

For this project, we were randomly assigned an artist for whom to create a maker retail space. We then had to choose a beverage company which complemented our artist's work and design a space for them within the storefront.

My artist was David Mach, a Scottish collage and sculptural artist with deep inspiration from the Pop Art movement. I chose the company Odd Society Spirits for the beverage collaboration because their focus on artistry and community aligned well with Mach's values.

Concept

This is an immersive space where the every day intertwines with the theatrical to create something altogether new. It has a playful atmosphere filled with spectacle and intrigue, awash with bright colours and comic book-inspired patterns, while maintaining a hint of the industrial surroundings.
